Govin Ruben

Govin Ruben is a Malaysian/Australian performance maker, designer and creative producer based in Melbourne. He is also the director of TerryandTheCuz, a Malaysian/Australian company which has created an array of interdisciplinary arts projects around the world.

Govin strives to create new forms that use interactive/visual stimulus to reflect and refract the changing socio-political landscape we inhabit; to attract new and more diverse audiences to the arts.

In recent years, he has initiated, steered, directed and designed multiple international collaborations. These include; ‘My Lingam Speaks’ a hybrid work in comedy, ‘Klue,Doh!’ a work in theatre, ‘The Bee Project’ a site specific work set in a functioning café, ‘Flatland; An Adaptation in Dance’, ‘Welcome2Flatland’ an Interactive Public Art Installation, ‘SK!N’ a work in contemporary performance based on true stories about Human Trafficking, ‘Citrawarna, Colours of Malaysia 2017’ a cultural spectacle set in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, ‘Thicker Than Water’ and the Off-Broadway season of ‘MADE IN AMERICA’ both presented at The Public Theater in New York City, 'LIGHT' a work about the shared colonial past of Penang and Adelaide which was presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre at the 2019 OzAsia Festival and 'HuRU-hARa' a hybrid performance art and venue at the 2020 AsiaTOPA Festival in Melbourne.

Govin is presently developing a new Off-Broadway endeavour titled ‘SPLIT’; a contemporary Malaysian adaptation of Hamlet, a graphic novel/augmented reality project titled ‘UnderKL’, the New York City Premiere of ‘SK!N’, an immersive theatrical experience titled 'The Vicious Cycle' in collaboration with The KONEX Cultural City in Buenos Aires and is currently developing and producing the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Festival ‘TEMASYA’ which will take place in the heart of Malaysia’s bustling capital in March 2022.

As a designer, He has worked on critically acclaimed projects such as ‘Brindabella’ (Balletlab), ‘National Youth Fest 2014-15’ (Youth Ministry Malaysia), ‘Black Box Theatre’ (2007 Prague Quadrennial), ‘Avast’ and ‘Avast 2' (Malthouse Theatre), ‘Act 3’ and ‘Room 222’ (Oz Pavilion, 2010 World Expo), ‘Bali Agung’ (Taman Safari Indonesia), ‘Mr Glamour’ and ‘Thyestes’ (Belvoir), ‘Kissy Kissy’ and ‘Doku Rai’ (Black Lung), ‘Rainbow Vomit’ (Dance North), ‘eXchange’ (Fragment 31), ‘Song’ and 'Come Away' (Ranters Theatre) and 'Keir Choreographic Awards' (Dancehouse/Carriageworks) .

Govin been nominated for a New York City Innovative Theatre Award, 7 Melbourne Greenroom Awards, a Royal Welsh Theatre Award and is a Melbourne Greenroom Award winner for Innovation in International collaboration for his work ‘SK!N’ and 5-time winner of the National Arts Award in Malaysia for his productions ‘Klue,Doh!’ and ‘Flatland’.
